Cabretta Beach 360

This panorama shows the diverse and dynamic environments on and around Cabretta Island (a northeastern part of Sapelo Island) and Blackbeard Island. Cabretta Island is separated from the main body of Sapelo Island by a tidal creek meandering through a salt marsh, whereas a larger tidal channel (Blackbeard Creek) divides Cabretta and Blackbeard. Tides and waves have moved and deposited sand along the south end of Blackbeard Island, with curved lines marking the gradual southward migration of the island. Dark brown deposits along the shoreline of Cabretta Island denote the former presence of ancient (relict) salt marshes that were buried but are now being exposed by shoreline erosion. White sandy deposits on the edge of Cabretta Island, called storm-washover fans, overlap the salt marshes in places and represent lateral migration of the beach.
