I think it would help our understanding of what it is that we're actually trying to protect and manage on the Georgia coast if, even though talking about the coastal islands or particular coastal islands especially waterfowl reserves refuges, as being wild or pristine, even though that has a lot of political value, it has a lot of emotional value.

It's one of the ways to get the public to support conservation initiatives. It's also one of the ways to get them to consume these places as tourists, you know, to build a tourist economy. But at the same time, it's kind of misleading. And I wish that we could, kind of remove the word pristine from the conversation and understand again that there's, whatever it is we're talking about, relatively pristine perhaps as I mentioned. I told you the anecdote about Gary Snyder, that's relatively pristine perhaps, but that there's whatever it is we're talking about is partly human made. And whatever management strategy we develop, it's partly going to involve humans as well. And human uses, even if they, if it's a look but don't touch use and negotiating among different stakeholders when we develop.

Protection and management practices is also a really important path to take. And all of that requires an understanding of the role of human history within, as part of natural systems on the Georgia coast. So, you know, get rid of the pristine thing and get rid of the nature culture divide. But at the same time, recognize that that doesn't mean getting rid of protecting beautiful and often very biologically rich places.
