I think that there are lots and lots of changes along the Georgia coast. I mean, the islands and the Tidewater, are historical artifacts as well as natural places. And then the consequences of lots of changes, and some of those are practically invisible. A lot of those changes are invisible, even though they were quite substantial.

The cutting, the harvesting of live oak for 18th century ship making, for example. But some of them, you can still find the remnants and especially I think rice plantations and the creating of these hydraulic infrastructures for tidewater rice production was a major disruption and one whose remnants are still there, although not in a way that that signals environmental damage.

And perhaps ironically, many of those plantations are now preserved and the old ditches and dikes used in the old infrastructure for growing rice is used to maintain habitat for waterfowl. Those plantations, like on Butler's Island, for example, which I write about in my book, are now important nodes along that flyway for waterfowl to stop and to feed.

And in some of them, rice is still grown, just for the waterfowl, though not to harvest. And they're protected areas. So the most damaged areas are, in this case, protected. And while we might not call them pristine, they're part of the wild Georgia coast.
