Butler Point

Butler Point is on the northwestern end of St. Simons Island. There is evidence that shows Butler Point was occupied in the prehistoric period. When the British arrived here, the military leader James Oglethorpe created an outpost for troops on the northwest tip of Butler Point. In 1793- 1794, Major Pierce Butler purchased the land with funds he got from selling his army commission to start Hampton Point Plantation. At the time, Hampton Plantation was recognized as a model coastal plantation until the early 20th century. In WWII, the military used this point bar as a military lookout.
