Button Gwinnett House

Button Gwinnett House is a single-story, wooden house on St. Catherine’s Island. This island was first owned by Mary and Thomas Bosomworth in 1760. The island was then sold to Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Georgia’s first
“President of the Assembly,” (also known as the governor). Due to piling debt, Gwinnett lost his land, slaves, and everything but his home after 11 years to creditors in 1773. At the end of the 18th century, the island was divided up into different sections with multiple owners.
