Colored Memorial School and Risley High

Opened in 1870 as the Freedmen's School, Risley School is located in Brunswick, Georgia. It was Brunswick's first public school for African Americans. The name was later changed to honor Captain Douglas Gilbert Risley who raised funds for the school's construction. Next door is the Colored Memorial High School which opened in 1923 and was built and named to honor African-Americans in World War I. The new Risley school was built in 1955 on the former Freedmen's School. Site is in the National Register of Historic Places.
