FJ Torras Causeway
FJ Torras Causeway is named after Fernando Joesph Torras (1885-1952) who was the Chief Engineer for this road and served as Brunswick's city manager for over 30 years. Before the causeway was built, St. Simons Island was only accessible by ferry. After surveying the marshy landscape at Brunswick mayor Malcolm B. McKinnon's rest, Torras found the best route to connect St. Simons Island to Brunswick. After 13 months of construction, the causeway was completed in 1924. The causeway was dedicated to Torras in January 1953, a year after he passed away. In addition to being a road, Torras Causeway has a 4.2-mile-long paved walking and bike path.
