Fort Frederica National Monument

General James Oglethorpe established Fort Frederica in 1736, three years after GA was established. The goal of this fort on St. Simons Island was to help protect the British colonies from the Spanish in Florida. Fort Frederica was the military headquarters for the newly formed GA colony. The fort was named after the Prince of Wales, Frederick Louis (1702-1754). The National Park Service took ownership over the fort in 1945. This site is in the National Register of Historic Places.
