Grover Island
Grover Island is located within Crooked River and is four miles from Cumberland Island National Seashore. The island consists of 400 acres of high ground and acres of waterways and salt marsh. Grover Island was the first national forest preserve designated by the U.S. It was set aside for conservation purposes in 1799. Grover Island could be considered the nation's first national forest. President John Adams recognized Grover as important for live oak timber. This island contains live oaks and is a refuge for endangered wood storks and ospreys. Archaeology work has revealed a historical record of a 1700's house on the island. Since 1926, the island is privately owned.
