Hampton Plantation
Hampton Plantation is on St. Simon's Island and was part of Pierce Butler's estate. Major Pierce Butler, from South Carolina, bought Hampton Point in northwestern St. Simons Island in 1774. Around three hundred enslaved laborers resided at Hampton Plantation. In the antebellum South, Hampton was one of the largest slave operations by the 1790s. During "The Weeping Time" event in Savannah, Major Butler's grandson sold 436 slaves that were from their Georgia plantations in 1859 to make up for debts.
