Hird Island

Hird Island, a marsh island between Ridge and Doboy Island, contained Palmetto Mills sawmill where harvested lumber was distributed. Darien lumberman Issac Means Aiken (born in 1831) moved to McIntosh County, GA from South Carolina in 1854 and developed the sawmill before the Civil War. Aiken ran the sawmill during the Reconstruction period. Currently, Hird Island is a private island.
