Kinlaw

Kinlaw is a neighborhood of Kingsland, Georgia that was started in 1865 after the war ended. In 1896, Kinlaw (a bustling African American community) purchased an acre of land to establish a one-room schoolhouse for Kinlaw’s children. In 1921, the community acquired a grant from the philanthropist Julius Rosenwald to expand and build a three-room schoolhouse. Kinlaw Rosenwald School was closed during the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case in 1954 which determined that racial segregation of children within the public school system was unconstitutional. The building remains intact and is the only Rosenwald rural school within this county that is in its original location.
