Lewis Island
Within the Altamaha Wildlife Management Area, Lewis Island is famous for its old-growth bald cypress forests and acts as an alligator sanctuary. Lewis Island is five miles from the mouth of the Altamaha River. The 6,000-acre island was likely named after an early owner. The island was owned by Georgia-Pacific Corporation and bought by the State of Georgia in 1973. The island was protected under the Georgia Heritage Trust which President Jimmy Carter a year earlier.
