Little Wassaw Island
One of the islands protected by the Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge. Like many islands on the Georgia coast, Little Wassaw has supported indigenous tribes since at least the 6th century CE. It passed into the hands of Black planter Anthony Odingsell in the early 1800s and later served as a military outpost during the Civil War and Spanish-American War. The island and its neighbors were established as a wildlife refuge in 1969.
