Oakland Missionary Baptist Church

Oakland Missionary Baptist Church was founded in October 1796 and started by slaves who wanted to create a church that was near them. The first pastor (named Father Cuffy) along with the deacons bought a small plot of land for $50 to build the church. The area surrounding the church was Oakland Plantation. Oakland Church was burned down during Union general Sherman's March to the Sea (from Atlanta to Savannah) in 1864. The church was later rebuilt. In 1970, the church was burned down again and was rebuilt in June 1975.
