Ogeechee River
The Ogeechee River runs 245 miles until it reaches the Atlantic Ocean. Its drainage to the coast is important in forming islands on the Georgia coast including Wassaw, Ossabaw, St. Catherines, Blackbeard, and Sapelo. The river is named after the Ogeechee Lime (Nyssa ogeche) which grows along the river. Before the Europeans arrived, the Mississippians and Yuchi people settled at the river for several centuries.
