Old Fort King George
In 1721, the British Empire built this fort in the 18th century to strengthen its presence along the Altamaha River at a time when the land was highly sought after by colonial powers. Colonel John Barnwell of South Carolina oversaw the establishment of Old Fort King George, named after England's King George I. Later, it supported settlers from Scotland who would go on to establish the city of Darien. In 1938, the State of Georgia bought the fort to preserve it as a historical monument. It is now a tourist site.
