Point Peter

It is at the junction of Peter Creek and the St. Marys River; during the American Revolutionary War, the British constructed Fort Tonyn at Point Peter in 1776 to control southern Georgia. In 1778, American forces compelled the British to evacuate this position. Later, during the War of 1812, Fort Peter was established at the same site. On January 13, 1815, British forces overwhelmed the American garrison, destroying the fort and occupying the area. This engagement is notable as one of the last battles of the War of 1812, occurring after the Treaty of Ghent had been signed but before its ratification.
