Pulaski Monument
The monument honoring General Casimir Pulaski, who fell at Savannah for American independence, was completed in 1854. Its cornerstone was laid on October 11, 1853, the 74th anniversary of his traditional death date. Dr. Richard D. Arnold chaired the commission overseeing the memorial, funded by $20,000 in public donations. Designed by Russian-born sculptor Robert Eberhard Launitz, the Italian marble monument features a statue of Liberty holding the Stars and Stripes and a laurel wreath. Launitz explained: "The love of liberty brought Pulaski to America; for liberty he fought and died. Thus, Liberty should crown his monument and share his homage."
