Saint Catherines Island
Saint Catherines Island is a barrier island, located 42 miles away from Savannah. Around 4,000 years ago Native Americans like the Guale are believed to have lived on the island in the 1500s. The first white settlement of present-day Georgia was also established here, with Pedro Menendez de Aviles landing at Saint Catherines in 1566. The island is now owned by St Catherines Island Foundation as a private nature preserve and research site. The Island is not open to the public but can be viewed by boat.
