Savannah State University

Savannah State University (SSU) is a public historically black university located in Savannah, Georgia. It was established in 1890 as the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth, making it the oldest public HBCU in Georgia and the first institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. It became Georgia State College from 1932 to 1950, and Savannah State College from 1950 to 1996 when it was renamed as a university. Its marine science program benefits from close proximity to the Wilmington River and surrounding marshes.
