The Waving Girl

The Waving Girl statue is named after Florence Margaret Martus (1868-1943). She was the daughter of the Fort Pulaski ordnance sergeant John Henry Martus. Florence and her brother, the lighthouse keeper, lived near Elba Island. For over 44 years, Florence would wave her handkerchief during the day at sailors passing by in ships on the Savannah River and waved a lantern at night.
